At Braemar we love sharing books! This year, students are encouraged to share their favourite books. Please let Mrs. Ross know if you have a recommended read and we will post it on this page.
Katherine Applegate has written so many good books and The One and Only Ivan is no exception. This is a touching story about a silverback gorilla named Ivan and his animal friends who live at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. This novel makes the reader think about issues including keeping animals in captivity for the purpose of entertainment. Katherine Applegate was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan when she learned about the true story of a gorilla named Ivan who lived in a similar situation for twenty-seven years before he was adopted by Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry about keeping animals in confined spaces. Reviews "Beautifully written, intelligent, and brave book…Quite simply, this story is life-changing."- Patricia MacLachlan, Newbery Medalist, Sarah, Plain and Tall "The One and Only Ivan will break your heart--and then, against all odds, mend it again." - Gary D. Schmidt, Newbery Honor author of The Wednesday Wars "Kindness and its ability to change lives shines through on every single page of this book." - Kathi Appelt, Newbery Honor author of The Underneath I can't wait to read the sequel to this novel which was just released on May 5th. Publisher Summary Bob sets out on a dangerous journey in search of his long-lost sister with the help of his two best friends, Ivan and Ruby. I have decided to focus on the author Peter Brown today. He has written both picture books and novels for kids. Creepy Carrots! is a favourite at Braemar. I can not keep this book on the shelves. Jasper Rabbit is terrified of carrots. He sees them everywhere! You will have to read this book to find out how Jasper gets rid of these carrots once and for all. To see other books written by Peter Brown, click here. The Wild Robot is one of my all time favourite novels for middle grade readers. This a robot nature story where technology and the environment collide. Roz is a robot who is shipwrecked on a remote island. Roz needs to adapt and learn to survive in her new surroundings. She has many adventures and slowly befriends the animal inhabitants of the island. For more details about this novel and how Peter Brown wrote this story click here. I am now looking forward to reading The Wild Robot Escapes. |
